Alla LED ljuskällor är i grunden dimbara. Det är drivdonet som avgör om en armatur är dimbar eller ej. Genom att byta drivdon kan alltså en ej dimbar armatur göras dimbar. Drivdon kan även ha stöd för flera olika dimningstyper, sk “all-in-one”. De flesta drivdon med DALI dimning stödjer även switch-/push-dim.
Det finns tre olika huvudprinciper för drivning av LED armaturer, konstant ström, konstant spänning och konstant effekt. Alla varianterna finns i ej dimbara och dimbara utföranden. Vilken av dessa som skall användas bestäms av ljuskällans konstruktion.
